Full job description
Assist customers with the check-out process, handle transactions, and provide customer service:
• Customer service: Greet customers, answer questions, and resolve complaints
• Transactions: Process sales, collect payments, issue receipts, and handle returns and exchanges
• Cash register: Operate the cash register, count the drawer at the end of the shift, and maintain records
• Products: Scan items, ensure pricing is correct, and bag or gift-wrap packages
• Store maintenance: Keep the checkout area clean, and check stock levels
• Reporting: Track transactions and sales, and report discrepancies
• Other duties: Redeem coupons and stamps, cross-sell products, and calculate foreign currency exchange
Cashiers can work in a variety of retail environments, including grocery stores, shopping malls, food service establishments, and entertainment venues. Some skills that are important for cashiers include:
• CommunicationCashiers should be able to communicate clearly and directly with customers, other employees, and management.
• Attention to detailCashiers need to be careful when handling large amounts of data to avoid inaccuracies.
• Computer proficiencyCashiers may need to use computers for documentation, record keeping, and other tasks.
• Time managementCashiers need to be able to complete their duties on time to ensure that banking systems function properly and customers are happy
• Perform basic math functions to collect payments and make change
• Operate registers, scanners, scales and credit card/debit card terminals
• Memorize product locations throughout the store and be able to direct customers or make suggestions
• Handle exchanges and refunds in a quick, efficient manner
• Collect payments and bag purchases for customers
• Maintain accurate cash drawer
• Take a tally of the funds in the cash register when required during a shift and produce transaction reports
• Keep the checkout area clean and orderly
